THE HISTORY OF BRAILLE QURAN IN INDONESIA

1 Juz Braille Quran
1 Juz Alquran Braille

The exact time of the presence of Braille Quran
for the first time in Indonesia is not very clear. There are at least two
versions that explain this. According to one of the Staffs of the Indonesian
Braille Publishing Center (BLBI) Yayat Rukhiyat, said that, Braille Quran was
first available in Indonesia around 1954. The Braille Quran at that time was an
inventory of the social department (depsos)which was a contribution from
Jordan. The Braille Quran was read in 1964 by   a Braille typist of
the Social Department in Yogyakarta, Supardi Abdi Somad. After that, the
Islamic Blind Foundation (Yaketunis) wrote it manually, then in 1973 it
collaborated with the Religious department(Depag) to produce  Braille
Quran massively.

Another version of the history of Braille Quran
in this country was revealed by the head of the printing of Wyata Guna
Foundation(YPWG) Ayi Ahmad Hidayat, “The Braille Quran has been owned by
the Wyata Guna library for a long time. but, because no one understood how to
read it, finally they just kept it in the library,” he explained.
“Until then, there was a teacher at Wyata Guna, Abdullah Yatim Piatu, who
was interested in flipping through the pages of those Braille Quran. Apparently
he was able to read it.” he added.

Whatever the histories are, Indonesian Muslim
blind people give thousands of thanks to the translators, because of them
nowadays muslim blind people in Indonesia are able to read braille Quran.

Indonesian blind muslims don’t have to worry
about the different versions of Braille Quran, Because, the Religious
Departement has set a standard mushaf which has become a guideline for all Braille
Quran printing in Indonesia.

“Editing of the Braille Quran is done by the
central Religious Department, Although now the Bandung office of the Religious
Department has editors who edit the Braille Quran before it’s published, but
the authority to censor the contents is owned by central of Religious
Department.” said the Head of the Al-Quran and MTQ Education Section of
Religious Department of Bandung City, Anwar Sanusi.

In its development, at present, Braille Quran has
been used by many students in various Special Schools for the blind from the
elementary schools to high schools, even university students and other blind
and visually impaired people throughout Indonesia.

PSBN Wyata Guna, located in the area of Jl.
Pajajaran No. 52 Bandung has a Braille Quran Course class program (KIAB). This
program is intended for those (blind and visually impaired people) who would
like to learn how to read and write Braille Quran correctly. This program is
non-formal education, intended for those aged between 15 and 35 years old.

PSBN Wyata Guna Public Relations Coordinator,
Suhendar, said, “At least 5 people a year join this program. The amount is
indeed small, because it really depends on the interests and abilities of the
students. Within a week, six times the students joined the KIAB (course)class
since 07:30 West Indonesia time they will receive the knowledge of Islam. Not
only how read / write Braille Qur’an taught there, the knowledge of Tauheed,
Shari’a, Fiqh, Tafsir and hadiths were also conveyed.”

“there are at least 3 instructors in charge
of teaching students in the class. But, it could be more effective if learning
was done individually, because the instructor would know the progress of each
student.” Said one of the instructors, Tine Gustini.

After a year taking the KIAB (course) education
program, the students would receive a certificate stating that they are fluent
in reading Braille Quran. In the certificate also written values in the form of
numbers as a result of each subject.

The NGO Ummi Maktum Voice is currently developing
a program literacy eradication of the braille Quran directly to blind and
visually impaired muslim people. Alhamdulillah, since the beginning of Its
journey, the Program for literacy eradication of the braille Quran has distributed
more than 13,000 Braille Koran to those who have the right to receive them, and
the program is accompanied by guidance for those who have not been able to read
it.
